Before you even register who the person is, you’ll know right off the bat that it’s Cara Delevingne because of her iconic, thick eyebrows and large, cat-like eyes. Only twenty years young, Delevingne has already made huge strides in the fashion industry in the last three years. She’s the current face of Burberry Beauty and has graced the covers of numerous magazines such as i-D (twice), Vogue Korea, and TUSH. Not to mention, she’s the model of choice as the British Fashion Awards named her the model of the year.
From London, England, Delevingne was born from a mother who works as a personal shopper at Selfridges and a father who delved in property development. Her sister Poppy Delevingne is also a model. Both of them attended Bedales boarding school in Hampshire. She was best friends with Genevieve Garner, daughter of the CEO of Storm Model Management. As she grew up, standing at 5’9 ½”, modeling just seemed to have found the perfect fresh face for the industry when the management company signed her in 2009.
Although sibling rivalry is an issue in every family, the Delevingne sisters have worked alongside each other well. She described the beginning of her career as a bit strange at first because she was in the same industry as her sister, but Poppy has been very supportive. Because both of them are very similar people, they offer each other guidance and advice.
Her editorial work and advertising campaigns is something to be commended. She has been photographed for Vogue Italia, Chanel, Vogue Russia, American Vogue, Elle France, DSquared2, Harper’s Bazaar, and more. Her looks channel both commercial and editorial shoots perfectly. She’s also been featured in campaigns for famous street style companies Zara, H&M, and ASOS. What makes her so sought after though is not just her versatility and edgy look—it’s her personality.
The fashion industry is a daunting place—women tower over each other in their high heels and look buried under the weight of their clothing. A lot of the times, the reputation of the industry is cut throat and even pretentious. Off the camera and away from the runway however, Delevingne is none of these things. She is often seen making silly faces and joking around, giving proof of her bubbly and down to earth personality on her Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Delevingne’s success also stems from her own classic style and appeal. Besides having fashion run in the family, it helps that her strong street style adds to the entire Cara presence. Delevingne always looks cool and rock’n’roll with her beanies, skinny jeans, and ubiquitous Burberry leather jacket. She has a personality that is relatable and easy to like, and she has a style and vibe that everybody seems to want. It’s the perfect match for style campaigns to spark the attention of the fashion hungry.
Winning model of the year was a big surprise to Delevingne as she told interviewers that she thought she heard wrong when they called her name. Her most notable project of the year however was walking in the famous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show set to air December 4, 2012, adding to a grand total of walking in sixty shows in 2012. Needless to say, her career is soaring. She currently ranks #25 on models.com.
Fashion is not her entire life however. After her modeling career, Delevingne hopes to pursue acting, directing, or something in the music industry. She’s already had a small job in the film industry, albeit without any spoken lines, but she plays Princess Sorokina in the remake of Anna Karenina alongside Keira Knightley. Recently, she declined an acting job to play Posh Spice in a movie about the Spice Girls because her agent advised that it would be a career killer. She commented that her future goals were to act in a movie with Meryl Streep or work in a film with Martin Scorsese. She is also a guitar player and describes herself as “drum mad”, stating that she can also beat box and make many sounds with her mouth. If she cannot perform in the music industry however, she hopes to have enough money to start a record label in order to allow her musician friends get their own break in the industry.
She’s an inspiration to all as fashion was not always on her radar. As a child she was not the conventional fashion obsessed child, making designs on her diapers or playing dress up in Mom’s closest. As a toddler, she actually could not keep the clothes she had on because she preferred to run around naked. Her fashion icons when she was younger were more along the lines of superheroes. Delevingne said that when she was five, she wanted to be Action Man, Spiderman, or simply, a cab driver. She’s more ambitious today, stating that her dream job in her career right now would be a cover of Vogue.
Besides the numerous editorial and advertising campaigns she has been in for big name fashion brands and popular magazines, Delevingne has also been featured in different shoots with creative photographers. She has worked with Nick Knight, Mario Testino, David Sims, and most recently shot with Terry Richardson in his studio, where she showcases her classic silly faces.
